A FAMILY OF FARMERS AND MILLERS K. R. Jones In his article 'The Parish of Carew (c.1838)', in The Pembrokeshire Historian, No. 4 (1972), p. 70. H. A. Lane refers to 'Mrs. Elizabeth Palmer, occupier of over 372 acres of land around Park and Llandigwynett owned by John Hensleigh Allen Esq'. Elizabeth Palmer nee Llewellin (1772-1852) was the second wife of George Palmer of Llandigwynett. George Palmer's ancestors had lived at Llandigwynett for some years and a Margaret Palmer, of this farm, was married on 15 October 1728, to Richard Hall of Daisybank Farm, Gumfreston, an ancestor of Benjamin Hall (1802-67), later Lord Llanover of Llanover and Abercarn, after whom 'Big Ben' was named. By his first wife, who died in 1789, George Palmer had a daughter, Elizabeth (b.1789) and by his second wife he had eleven children including: Allen (b. 1798) who married Hannah Davies and was living at Llan- digwynett with his mother in 1841; Hannah (b.1804) married William Hall (1800-77) and had Samuel (b. 1841) of Tynewydd, St Bride's-super-Ely, near Cardiff, and Ivy Tower, St. Florence, near Tenby. Samuel Hall was the proprietor of a drapery store in High Street, Cardiff. He died in October 1921 and his grave lies on the south side of Carew Cheriton church. Michael (b.1814) married Mary Anne Bates of Halifax, Yorks, by whom he had George Llewellyn Palmer (b.1856) who became a Brigadier General and was Member of Parliament for Westbury, Wilts, in 1918. Martha (b.1802), married at Carew Cheriton church on 16 November 1824 Thomas (b.1794) son of John Jones of Ford in the parish of Carew, formerly of Pembroke, and his wife Margaret. Thomas and his wife settled at Linney Farm, Castlemartin, and had fifteen children including: Elizabeth (b.1827), married a Mr. Graham of London who was said to have been 'the proprietor of Nicholson's Gin.' He was a racehorse owner: his filly 'Formosa' won The Oaks in 1868, entered in the name of Benjamin George Jones, but it ran in the St. Leger under its owner's name; Ann (b. 1828) married a Mr. Roberts of St. Twynnell's. Martha (b. 1838), married David Protheroe, son of Charles and Elizabeth Jane Saer, of Dairy Hayes Farm, Carew; Thomas (b. 1836), married Bethesda Robarts, of St Columb's, Cornwall. He is described in the census returns of 1871 as a miller, living in the parish of St Mary's, Pembroke. The family is known to have worked the mills at Pembroke, Carew and Blackpool, near Canaston Bridge. Thomas' father also owned a small fleet of coastal vessels which, among other cargoes, shipped stones from New Shipping, Carew, and, possibly, limestone to Carew Mill for the surrounding farms; Fanny Louisa (b. 1842), married David, son of James and Phoebe Stratton (or Stratten) of Carew Newton House, Carew. Benjamin George Jones (b.1841), married Margaret Jane Williams, daughter of Edward Williams, hotel keeper of Neyland, at Llanstadwell Church on 16 May 1867. Benjamin George was a corn merchant. He and his wife, are shown in the 1871 census as living at Pauntley, The Green, Pembroke, where their children Frederick Ronald (1870-1933), my father, Edith and Henry were born.
