authors, translators and adapters. Among the primary conclusions are that an increasing number of translations and adaptations have been published, primarily to improve the numbers of books published in order to meet demand, and to enhance the range and quality of materials available. The growth closely reflects major policy and strategic decisions taken by funding organisations in Wales, and it is to be seen at its most significant in titles published for children. The numbers of titles for adult readers have grown but have remained a relatively small proportion of the total output. Translations and adaptations have become increasingly important to the Welsh booktrade, particularly where the numbers of authors are limited by a number of factors and when economic considerations affect publishing houses more acutely, but authors and translators have also derived considerable benefit from translation and adaptation activities. The present position appears to be satisfactory in that the benefits of adaptation and translation outweigh problems, but a heavier dependency on such activity in future is likely to cause concern.
