A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF WELSH PERIODICALS, 1851-1900 HUW WALTERS This work, which is expected to be published by the National Library of Wales in the near future, is a sequel to A Bibliography of Welsh Periodicals, 1735-1850 which appeared in 1993. The volume will list and describe the Welsh periodicals and periodicals of Welsh association which were founded between the years 1851 and 1900. In the preface to the first volume, it was stated that 'the task of compiling the second volume is proceeding apace'. In the meantime, eight years have passed, and many scholars, researchers and students have enquired as to its progress during the last three years. The reasons for the delay are legion. Firstly, it had never been realised that so many periodicals, which encompassed such a vast array of subjects, had been founded between 1851 and 1900. The bibliography will follow the same pattern, more or less, as the first volume. Perhaps it will be beneficial here if we remind ourselves of the main characteristics of the work and its organisation. The work will contain a descriptive list of periodicals published in Wales, or periodicals of Welsh association published in England and overseas, arranged according to the Welsh alphabet. For the purpose of this bibliography, a periodical is defined as a publication which was intended to appear for an indefinite period. With regard to frequency of publication, weekly, fortnightly, monthly,
