Peterstone is called in Welsh Llanbedr yn Gwenllwch. It contains 2,099 acres of land and 1,267 acres of foreshore. The rateable value in 1815 was £ 3,226 and in 1891 £ 6,226. The population has been as follows: Year No. of inhabitants 1801 85 1811 111 1821 122 1831 110 1841 137 1881 156 1891 135 The manor of Peterston belonged from early times to the monastery of St Augustine at Bristol which was made into a cathedral in the year 1542. On the 15 September 1564 George Carew dean of Bristol complained that whereas he was lawfully seised in his demesne as of fee of and in the chapel of St Peters in the Moor otherwise Peterston, and 40 acres of land, divers charters &c. had come into the hands of Robert Adam and Thomas ffoulke who had conveyed to themselves several estates &c. The answer was that long time before the land was leased in fee simple or by the rod by the lord of the manor, there being paid at the decease of every tenant fines and heriots to the amount of 6s. 8d. per acre; that John Loden 11 years before was seised in his demesne as of fee and at a court of the manor 8 July 1 & 2 Phil. et Mar., had surrendered the same to the use of Margaret Robert widow, that the said Margaret took to husband the defendant Thomas ffoulke. The dean replied that the lands were parcel of the demesne of the manor of Peterston; that about 20 years previous Thomas Johnes farmer of the demesne did demise the lands to those by whom the defendants claimed; that Thomas ffoulkes was not ever seised; that William Adam father to Thomas Adam [sic} was not ever seised.1 From the Survey of Church Land Anno 1649 at Lambeth Palace Library" Monmouth A Survey of the Manor of St Peters in the Moores in the County of Monmouthe with the rights members and appurtences to the same belonging and Peterstone late p'cell of the possessions or late belonging to the late Deane & Chapter of the Cathedrall Church of Bristoll made & taken by us whose names are hereunto subscribed in the moneth of August and September by virtue of a commision to us granted grounded uppon an Act of the Comons of England assembled in parliam' for the abollishing of Deanes & Chapters Cannons Prebends & other offices & Tytles of & belonging to any Cathedrall or Collegiate Church or chappell within England & Wales under the handes & seales of ffive or more of the Trustees in the sayed Act nominated and appointed.
