Michaelstone y Fedw is the English form of the name by which this parish is known in Welsh, Llanfihangel y Fedw, St Michael's Church of the birch trees. The parish is partly in Glamorganshire and that part has of recent years been called Llanfedw to distinguish it from the Monmouthshire portion. It contains 1,083 acres of land and 10 of water in Monmouthshire and 2,433 acres of land and 20 of water in Glamorganshire. The rateable value of the Monmouthshire portion was £ 857 in 1815 and £ 997 in 1891. The rateable value of the Glamorganshire portion was £ 1,949 in 1891.
