Of more than local fame was Doctor Joseph Davies who lived here in the nineteenth century, known for his pack of harriers with which for many years he hunted the district. His hounds were of the old Welsh breed, tan, black and tan, and yellow and white, and they were equally successful in killing, according to the season, foxes, hares and otters. It was said that they never stooped to the scent of a quarry they were not in pursuit of. He hunted his pack to Welsh cries' and maintained the traditions of Welsh hunting. He is celebrated in a book of Welsh poems written by Gwilym Ilyd, William Jones of Machen, to which are English translations by William Downing Evans of Newport (Leon). The first poem is on the doctor's marriage, 1 May 1843, the next on the birth of his daughter, 9 March 1844, the last on the death of Mrs. Davies, 7 May 1854.
