Malpas is considered to take its name from malus passus, a bad or wet place on the Roman road, which went from Caerlleon below Malpas church, over the Malpas brook, and so to Pye Comer, and by Bassaleg to Cardiff. The parish contains 974 acres of land and 10 of water. The rateable value in 1815 was £ 948 and in 1891 £ 3,222. The population has been as follows:- Year No. of inhabitants 1801 178 1811 150 1821 196 1831 211 1841 270 1881 320 1891 430 The manor Malpas was a cell belonging to the priory of Montacute in Somersetshire and was founded by Winebald, son of Drue de Baladon, brother of Hamelyn the conqueror of Over Gwent. At the dissolution of the monasteries it was valued at £ 15 2s. 4d. and by letters patent dated 4 July I Edw. VI [1547] was granted on lease to sir William Herbert (afterwards first earl of Pembroke of the second creation) described as' all the scite of the circuit wall, walks and precincts of the late house or cell of Malpas and manor of Malpas. and the rectory of the church of Malpas and lands. &c.. to the late priory of Mountague in the county of Somerset now dissolved heretofore belonging and the advowson &c. at the rent of 6s. 7/xl {Extracts from Valor Ecclesiasticus iv 361} Cella de Malopassu alias Malpas prope Newport super aqua Uske cum redditibus, oblationibus, ceterisque obventionibus, proficuis et commoditatibus universis, una cum eorundem vero valore communibus annis. et appropriata monasterio de Muntague in comitatu Somerset.
