Henllys means the old mansion and though the name would imply that it was the abode of an ancient Welsh chieftain I have not discovered who this might be. The parish contains 2,653 acres of land and 10 of water. The rateable value in 1815 was £ 1,055 and in 1891 £ 2,458. The population has been as follows: Year No. of inhabitants 1801 188 1811 182 1821 209 1831 207 1841 245 1881 334 1891 392 All the parishioners speak Welsh and Welsh services were held until quite recently, the afternoon service being in that language. The Church The church consists of a chancel and nave with a tower at the west end. On the south side is a large porch but there are no special architectural features. In the churchyard is the shaft of the ancient cross mounted on a massive base also ancient, the whole standing on four steps. Inside the church there are no special features, the whole having apparently from time to time been modernized. The chancel has a barrel roof Henllys Church. Photo Rev. T. Rees, 1887. National Library of Wales. Henllys divided into compartments with oak frames. The font is the ancient one, and is octagonal in shape. Henllys and Bettws were chapelries under Bassaleg. The former is now constituted a rectory.
