A CONTRIBUTION TO AN INDEX The Arminian, the Methodist and the Wesleyan Methodist Magazines 1778-1878 By the Editor Irecently had occasion to go through all the numbers of The Arminian Magazine and its successors (The Methodist Magazine and The Wesleyan Methodist Magazine) from 1778 to 1878. Though I was seeking information relating to the history of Metho- dism in Wales in the 18th century, I began early on to make a note of all the references to Methodists in Wales (and in some cases to Methodists in England who had Welsh associations) which appeared in the Obituaries, Recent Deaths, Short Biographical Sketches, Memoirs and Accounts which appeared fairly regularly over many years. Unfortunately, I started on this subsidiary task too late to be able to compile a comprehensive Index to such notices-along the lines of the one published for England and Wales as far as 1839 in Volume 7 of the Proceedings of the Wesley Historical Society. What follows therefore should be regarded as a contribution to such an Index. There are inevitably a number of omissions (though in toto one feels that they are not likely to be numerous), and any additions or corrections will be welcomed and published in later numbers of this Journal. For the guidance of any members who may use it, the following points might be borne in mind 1. It does not include any references taken from the Obituary Notices which were re-printed from the Minutes of Conference. Those Minutes are usually much more easily available than the Magazines they relate only to ministers and the obituary notice relating to a particular minister normally appeared in the volume immediately following his death. 2. To avoid unnecessary printing costs, the years in Cols. 3 and 4 have been abbreviated (except in the case of 1778 and 1878, to avoid confusion). It is necessary to remember however that The Arminian Magazine appeared from 1778 to 1797, The Methodist Magazine from 1798 to 1821, and The Wesleyan Methodist Magazine from 1822 onwards, e.g. 88, 459 Arminian Magazine, 1788, p. 459. 08, 233 The Methodist Magazine, 1808, p. 233. 38, 801 The Wesleyan Methodist Magazine, 1838, 801.
