of 1649 and the early part of 1650, i.e. about the time the army was deciding how the Crown lands were to be disposed of, the regiment was quartered in the counties of Lincoln, Rutland, Leicester and Nottingham. Despite the fact that the regiment was scattered, a large number, and probably all, of the regiment in February 1650 signed powers of attorney, appointing John Nelthorpe, the Adjutant-general of the regiment, to act on their behalf and to contract for royal lands in payment of the debentures owing to the signatories.4 At the same time, the signatories named trustees to whom the lands contracted for were to be conveyed 'upon trust to be employed and disposed for and towards the respective satisfaction proportionably to the said arrears due to the said Colonel, officers and soldiers.' The trustees appointed were six junior officers of the regiment, representing the six companies :5 Thomas Izod of Kirkby Bane. William Walls of Hougham, Lines. Nathaniel Forster of Woodborough, Notts. James Coale of Titchmarsh, Northants. Thomas Ward of Lincoln. Thomas Deane of London. At this time, the debentures owing to the regiment amounted to £ 37,588 6s. 7-id. Of this, £ 8,099 125. 8-ad. was due to Col. Twisleton and his troop together with others who had signed the Letters of Attorney whose arrears were assigned to Twisleton or others of his troop and, in similar terms, the following sums were debited to the following officers and their troops: f s. d. Major James Berry 6 692 17 41 Capt. John Nelthorpe 7,485 4 10-1 Capt. Original Pearte 5,549 11 81 Capt. Owen Cambridge 4,413 ? 2-1 Capt. Hezekiah Haynes 5,357 13 9 4 C. H. Firth and G. Davies, The Regimental History of Cromwell's Army (Oxford, 1940), I, 166. The main power of attorney was dated 7 February 1650 and the names were grouped in the 6 troops of the regiment and amounted in total to 587 names [S.P.28/143/Part 3, f.68]. See also J. Berry and S. G. Lee, A Cromwellian Major General (Oxford. 1938) p. 101, n. 3. There is another version, but not a copy, of this document [S.P./143/Part 3. f.71]. There are two other powers of attorney, one dated 10 February 1650 containing 114 names and another of 24 August 1650 containing 68 names [S.P.28/142/Part I. f.5, f.22]. I have not been able to establish the relationship of these to the main power of attorney. S This list is taken from a document of 1655 [P.R.O. Close Rolls. C54/3875/31J. In 1651 Izod was probably a lieutenant (Firth and Davies, Regimental History, p. 97) Walls. Foster and Coale were cornets in 1655 and were presumably of no higher rank in 1650. Deane was a captain in 1655. Coale, who in 1655 was Quartermaster of the regiment, is sometimes referred to as of Titchmarsh [14 April 1656. C54/3918/24] and sometimes [8 May 1656. C54/3917/18] as of Lincoln. Ward, who died before June 1655, had been a cornet.
