structure plan putting forward alternatives and weighing them is available. He rightly criticises 'Wales: The Way Ahead' as providing nothing of the order required. But he tends as a result to indulge in a form of instant planning for which the book does not provide sufficient a basis over the whole range of socio-economic problems. What this book does indicate, however, like so much other writing on the area, is that broadly framed planning proposals for public discussion, and indicating directions that south Wales might take, are long overdue. It is interesting to note that Dr. Humphrys is never sure whether growth at the valley mouths is spontaneous or induced. At times he writes of the advantages of these parts in terms of sites and situation, but at others qualifies this by noting that 'the debt to, and dependence upon, government support. needs to be fully recognised'. As this, together with the Llantrisant New Town proposal, suggests, a strategy is vaguely apparent but it has never been put forward and assessed alongside alternatives, and its impact upon the remainder of south Wales has never been the subject of study. Dr. Humphrys's book is a most useful addition to the literature on south Wales. It provides further evidence of the substantial changes in the regional economy which have taken place and their spatial implications. One can only join the author in a plea for a plan.
