SHORT NOTICES The Annual Report of the Clwyd County Archivist for 1976 was publish- ed by the Clwyd County Record Office, Old Rectory, Hawarden, Deeside CH7 3NR in 1977. In addition to listing accessions at Hawarden and Ruthin in the course of 1976, this Report also includes some attractive brief articles, of which the most substantial is R. K. Matthias, 'The Records of the National Union of Mineworkers in North Wales'. This contains some helpful information on Edward Hughes (1856-1925), the permanent agent of the NUM in north Wales and a pioneer of trade union organisation in the area. The National Library of Wales Journal, XX, No. 1 (Summer, 1977) (obtainable from the National Library at 50p) contains an interesting miscellany, including an analysis of Welsh copies of 'Prophetiae Merlini' by Brynley F. Roberts; an account of incidents in the early political career of Robert Harlev, M.P. for Radnor, by J. A. Downie; and notes on the rural deanery of Dyffryn Clwyd to 1885 by Gwynfryn Richards. David Fraser, Yr Anturiaethwyr (University of Wales Press, Cardiff, 1978, Pp. 352) is a Welsh translation by Wendy Davies of The Adventurers, 1485-1760 (reviewed ante, VIII, No. 4, 483-4).
