Casebound £ 12.50 ISBN 0 7083 0681 0 the appearance of this book is to be welcomed and all the more so because, as its editor justifiably points out, its publication marks "a long stride towards a full-scale analytical study of the Welsh borough". In a useful introductory chapter he reviews the literature of the subject and available source materials before proceeding to consider the diversity of origins and common characteristics of mediaeval Welsh boroughs. (British Book News) THE PRE-FLAVIAN FINE WARES Kevin Greene Pp. xvi, 165, 55 b/w illus., 1979. Casebound f 14.50 ISBN 0 7083 0457 5 The first volume in a series of reports on the excavations at Usk 1965-76, under the general editorship of W. H. Manning. The most remarkable results of the work are set out in this volume. Several circumstances combine to make Usk a particularly advantageous site for the study of pre-Flavian fine wares, providing a large quantity of pottery assignable to the fortress period with complete confidence. Usk has produced without any doubt the largest quantity of uncontaminated Neronian material yet excavated in Britain. UNIVERSITY OF WALES PRESS 6 GWENNYTH StREEt, CATHAYS, CARDIFF CF2 4YD
