WELSH SOCIETY AND NATIONHOOD Historical Essays presented to Glanmor Williams Edited by R.R. Davies, Ralph A. Griffiths, leuan Gwynedd Jones and Kenneth 0. Morgan This collection of essays explores certain central themes of Welsh history from the Dark Ages to the twentieth century. They have been written by thirteen historians as a tribute to GLANMOR WILLIAMS, the most distinguished Welsh historian of his generation, on the occasion of his retirement from the Chair of History at the University College of Swansea. The essays reflect the wide-ranging interests and catholic approach of Glanmor Williams's own historical work. Hardback £ 25.00, paperback £ 9.95. HENRY TUDOR AND WALES Glanmor Williams This is a short biography of Henry Tudor, later Henry VII. It concentrates particularly on the Welsh aspects of his lineage, birth, and upbringing, and his awareness of his own Welshness and its relationship to his claims on the throne. It traces the influences that were brought to bear on him and his own concern to win Welsh support, chiefly via the Welsh bards and their patrons. It indicates the heavy dependence of Henry on Wales and the Welsh for the success of his Bosworth campaign- something like half his troops, at least, were Welsh. It also examines the nature of his dealings with Wales and the Welsh people after he had become king and also traces briefly the ways in which he has been regarded by Welsh historians and publicists from the sixteenth century down to the present day.
