REGISTER OF LANDSCAPES, PARKS AND GARDENS OF SPECIAL Historic Interest IN WALES, PART 1: PARKS AND GARDENS. GWENT AND CLWYD. PART 2: LANDSCAPES. 2 vols., CADW: Welsh Historic Monuments, Cardiff, 1994. N.p. These are the first two volumes of the register of landscapes, parks and gardens of historic interest in Wales. Part 1 deals with parks and gardens, Part 2 with landscapes. The register is based upon the counties created in the 1974 local government reorganization. Volumes concerned with the other Welsh counties will appear soon, or are in the course of preparation. The register is produced by Cadw: Welsh Historic Monuments, in partnership with the International Council on Monuments and Sites (COMOS). Though aimed at local planning authorities, owners of gardens and developers, and not on sale to the general public through normal retail outlets, the volumes contain much that will interest both the specialist reader as well as those with more general concerns, such as local history, archaeology and the history of Wales. The two volumes are identical in layout; following a brief forward to the series, then an even briefer forward to the register, and a short introduction and some explanatory notes, the reader is plunged into the meat of the register. The first volume, Gwent, consists of 55 gardens entries spread over 163 pages. The second, Clwyd, has 74 entries over 291 pages. The increase from approximately three pages per entry for the Gwent volume to four pages for Clwyd is not a reflection of the greater importance of gardens in the latter county, but is presumably a result of more in-depth research. It is to be hoped that the amount of information for each entry does not increase volume by volume, otherwise the register will become unwieldy and unusable. All entries are presented in a similar format; a plan, based on Ordinance Survey 1:10,000 maps, shows the park and garden boundaries, the essential setting and significant views. The text consists of summary information, including grid references, statutory designations (listed buildings, scheduled ancient monuments, free preservation orders etc), type of site, main phases of construction and site evaluation. Site evaluation employs a system similar to that for listed buildings and comprises three grades: I, II* and II, grade I being the highest. A site description of one to two A4 sides of text then follows. This consists of a history of the park or garden and associated house, and a brief outline of the extant remains. For most readers the site descriptions will be of sufficient detail, but should further information, be required then site dossiers housed with Cadw and the National Monuments Record, Aberystwyth, can be consulted. The parks and gardens included in the register encompass a wide range
