APPENDIX: KNIGHTED WELSH LANDOWNERS, 1485-1558 ANNUAL TOTALS ON 1 JANUARY EACH YEAR The totals, separated by colons, shown below give the total number of knights with lands wholly or mainly in Wales who are both known to have held knightly status and to have been alive on 1 January of every year from 1485 to 1558 inclusive. Numbers in brackets appearing after totals show that on the relevant dates there were also knights whose knightly status was then uncertain (in which case '? 1 k' appears) and/or knights who are not certainly known to have been still alive then (in which case '? 1 d' appears). Knights in this latter category continue to be recorded as '? 1 d' for five years following that in which they are last known to have been alive, unless there is evidence that they had died before five years had elapsed.
