teacher-training, and Anglicanism' (although only about 30 per cent of students admitted are Anglicans, practising or nominal), and one might reasonably look forward to many years of active life for this 'distinctive college' in one of Wales's most prosperous towns. This study is set well in the context of the social and educational history of Wales during the past two centuries, and for the most part it reads well, although the thematic approach sometimes makes it difficult to grasp developments in the college as a whole, and there is some imbalance in the coverage of the 150 years. The first nine chapters are essentially Dr Grigg's doctoral thesis on Trinity between 1848 and 1948, with the remaining two chapters being additions to bring the story up to date. One might have wished for a rather fuller treatment of the past fifty years of change and expansion. It is a shade unfortunate that a lecturer in an Anglican college should use more than once the form 'the Revd' followed directly by a surname, and even more unfortunate that he should refer to the 'Church of Wales'. Nevertheless, Dr Grigg has brought to light a great deal of significant material about Trinity, and all historians of education in Wales must be indebted to him. Dr Grigg must also be thanked for 'SefycUiad UrddasoV: Hanes Darluniadol Coleg y Drindod, Caerfyrddin 'A Noble Institution': An Illustrated History of Trinity College, Carmarthen (Gomer, Llandysul, 1998), a sumptuous collection of photographs, with an informative bilingual text, which makes a splendid companion volume to his History of the college. Wrth edrych yn 61 ar hyd llwybrau hanes y traddodiad cerddorol yng Nghymru trwy lygaid 'goleuedig' yr ugeinfed ganrif, mor hawdd yw i ni fychanu cyfraniad yr unigolion blaenllaw hynny, yn y ganrif ddiwethaf yn enwedig, fu'n weithgar yn hyrwyddo a chefnogi'r grefft. Onid ymdrechion rhai fel John Thomas (Pencerdd Gwalia), R. S. Hughes, a Joseph Parry a'u tebyg fu'n gyfrwng i osod seiliau cadarn ar gyfer dadeni cerddorol ein canrif ni? Ac onid brwdfrydedd heintus y gwyr hyn fu'n fodd i ennyn diddordeb y genedl gyfan mewn gweithgarwch cerddorol o'r fath?
