PROCEEDINGS OF THE CARDIGANSHIRE ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY AND OF ITS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE A MEETING of the Executive Committee was held at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, on Saturday afternoon, 3 May 1952. Sir Bryner Jones presided and there were also present Professors E. G. Bowen (Vice-Chairman), David Williams, and T. Jones Pierce, Mrs. Frost Smith, Miss Gower Jones, Messrs. D. D. Evans, ]. R. Davies, Caradog Morris, D. G. Griffiths, Gildas Tibbott (Hon. Editor), Henry Morgan (Hon. Treasurer), and I. R. Davies (Acting Secretary). The Hon. Editor reported on the issue of the next number of the Society's journal Ceredigion. The question of issuing a smaller-sized volume annually or a larger volume biennially, owing to the financial position, had been left undecided at the previous meeting. The statement of accounts showed a balance of £ 58 due to the printers (Messrs. J. D. Lewis & Sons, Ltd.) in respect of the previous number. Despite the increasing costs, the printers were prepared to publish the next number at the same price as before. It was also reported that the balance in the bank was £ 35 and that a sum of £ 36 was due from the Education Committee. Of the 370 members 176 had paid their subscriptions for 1951 and 56 for 1952. The Chairman said the position was not unique as compared with that of many other similar societies dependent on voluntary subscriptions. He was anxious to continue publishing the journal as it was a constant reminder of the Society's existence. After discussion it was agreed on the proposition of Professor Jones Pierce, seconded by Miss Gower Jones, to proceed with the issue of the next number of Ceredigion in a shortened form. It was also agreed to circularise an appeal to members for the renewal of subscriptions, the circular letter to be drafted by the Chairman and the Hon. Editor, and to ask the Education Committee for a further grant in order to supply copies of the journal to schools. The Chairman read a letter from the Acting Secretary stating that having been appointed to a teaching post in Leicester he was obliged to resign the secretaryship. On the Chairman's proposition the resignation was accepted with regret and the Committee passed a vote of cordial congratulation to Mr. I. R. Davies on his appoint- ment. Mr. Davies acknowledged and thanked the Committee. Pending the recovery and return of Dr. J. Henry Jones (Director of Education), Messrs. J. R. Davies and D. G. Griffiths consented to act as secretaries. Arrangements were made for the next general meeting to be held at Cardigan on 5 July with visits to St. Dogmaels and Cilgerran. Replying to questions, the Chair- man repeated the result of his enquiries relating to the Nanteos Cup (see page 57). A general meeting of the Society was held on Saturday afternoon, 5 July 1952, at the Guildhall, Cardigan. The Mayor, Councillor F. D. Lewis, gave a civic reception and entertained the members to tea. Sir Bryner Jones thanked the Mayor for the welcome and said it was a pleasure to visit that ancient borough so beautifully situated. An address on Old Cardigan,' given by Mr. Donald Davies, C.M., Arosfa, was illustrated by lantern slides lent by Mr. T. T. Mathias. The slides included early Speed maps with views of the Castle, the port, streets, Mwldan flood, brick works, and places of worship. Mr. Roderic Bowen, Q.C., M.P., proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker. After a general discussion the Chairman (Sir Bryner Jones) thanked those who had made arrangements for the meeting, including Mr. Tom Evans, M.A., J.P., headmaster of the County School. After tea at the Tudor Cafe Professor E. G. Bowen expressed thanks to the Mayor. The members then visited St. Dogmaels Abbey where an address was given by Professor T. Jones Pierce, M.A. The Reverend W. G. Jones, vicar of St. Dogmaels, in proposing a
