CYMDEITHAS HYNAFIAETHWYR SIR ABERTEIFI JOURNAL OF THE CARDIGANSHIRE ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY CYFROL (VOLUME) II SIR CADWALADR BRYNER JONES, C.B., C.B.E., M.Sc., LL.D., 1872-1954 Chairman of the Cardiganshire Antiquarian Society, 1934-1954 THE death of Sir Bryner Jones has deprived the Society not only of one of its most loyal members but also of a very distinguished Chairman. Sir Bryner, like so many others who have served the Society well, was not a Cardiganshire man by birth. He hailed from the neighbouring county of Merioneth and we should not overlook the fact that he was an equally prominent member of the Merioneth Historical and Record Society. Nevertheless, Sir Bryner spent most of his life based on Aberystwyth. He was a distinguished old student of the College and his eminence in scientific matters related to agriculture ensured his selection in 1907 to the Chair of Agriculture in his old College. Pre- viously he had been out of Wales for a brief period holding a lecturer- ship in Agriculture at King's College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Sir Bryner during his period as Professor laid the foundations of the outstanding importance of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, in agricultural studies and he maintained an interest in their development throughout his life. He left his Chair to become Secretary to the Welsh Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, whose offices were also located in the town. Throughout this period, although he was officially a Civil Servant, he maintained the closest interest in academic matters and particularly in those related to the past. He was a recognized authority on early types of British cattle and was among the first to realize that a study of this kind could only be furthered by a close link with the very impcrtant developments that were taking place in British archaeology and prehistory during CEREDIGION CYLCHGRAWN 1954 Rhifyn (NUMBER) 3
