PROCEEDINGS OF THE CARDIGANSHIRE ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY AND OF ITS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE A MEETING of the Executive Committee was held at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, on Saturday afternoon, 24 October 1953. Professor E. G. Bowen, the Vice-Chairman, presided in the absence of the Chairman, Sir Bryner Jones, who was indisposed. A warm welcome was extended by the Committee to Mr. J. E. R. Carson, LL.B., the newly-appointed Secretary of the Society, and to Mr. A. E. Farley, the Assistant Secretary. A letter from the Oxford University Press was read, in which it was stated that the reprinting of Forty Welsh Traditional Tunes was proceeding. The Committee discussed the legal question of the copyright and it was decided to request the Oxford Univers- ity Press to reproduce the copyright in the reprinted volume as in the original edition. It was reported that the Cardiganshire Education Committee had agreed to purchase five hundred copies of the reprint, and Mr. Alun R. Edwards, the County Librarian, was thanked for his good offices in this matter. Arrangements were made for the Annual General Meeting to be held in Aber- ystwyth on 28 November, when it was hoped to be able to arrange a joint meeting with the Mid-Wales Branch of the Historical Society. It was also agreed that the 1954 Summer Meeting of the Society should be held at Lampeter for the greater convenience of members resident in that part of the county. The Hon. Editor informed the Committee that he had sufficient material in hand for a further number of Ceredigion. After ascertaining the financial position of the Society it was agreed to issue another number. Professor Bowen stressed the necessity of publishing the journal as a means of retaining the members' interest in the Society's activities. The question was raised whether the sub-committee of the Society was still functioning in connection with the museum project. In reply it was stated that the sub-committee was still functioning but that only two of the original four members remained, viz., Sir Bryner Jones and Professor Bowen. Mr. Gildas Tibbott and Mr. A. E. Farley were appointed to fill the vacancies. A joint meeting of the Society with the Mid-Wales Branch of the Historical Society was held at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, on Saturday, 28 November 1953, when the chair was taken by Professor David Williams. His Worship the Mayor (Councillor W. G. Pryse), who was accompanied by the Mayor- ess and the Town Clerk (Mr. J. Henwood Jones), gave a civic welcome. An ex- tremely interesting lecture was then delivered by Professor H. J. Habbakuk, M.A., Chichele Professor of Economic History in the University of Oxford, on the subject The English Aristocracy in the Eighteenth Century'. After discussing the rise of a class of gentry in the seventeenth century the speaker dealt with the growth of the large landed estates of the aristocracy, emphasising in particular the role played by heiresses in the building up of large estates. Speaking of the entailing of estates to ensure their preservation, he remarked that more important than fee simple' or fee tail' was female Professor Habbakuk was cordially thanked by Professor R. F. Treharne, whilst Professor E. G. Bowen conveyed the thanks of both societies to the Mayor for his welcome and for his hospitality in entertaining the gathering to tea after the meeting. A meeting of the Executive Committee was held at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, on 6 February 1954, Sir Bryner Jones presiding. A letter
