OBITUARY IT is with deep regret that we have to record the passing of Mr. J. R. Davies, M.B.E., the Society's Honorary Treasurer. He had been connected actively with the affairs of the Society for a quarter of a century. In recent years he had undergone two major operations, but the end came peacefully at his home, Lluest, North Road, Aberystwyth, on 15 July 1960, on the eve of his ninety- second birthday. Mr. Davies had been connected with our sister Society in Carmarthenshire as a Trustee and member of the Council--offices he retained until his demise. On retiring from the banking service he came to live in Aberystwyth. He became interested in many noteworthy causes and served these diligently, but it is as an Honorary Officer of this Society that we remember him. In 1936 he was appointed Financial Secretary. It is true to say that Mr. Davies in company with the late Mr. Dewi G. Griffiths kept alive the name of the Society during the war years and was responsible for its re-birth in 1947. In 1952 he was Joint Honorary Secretary, then Financial Secretary, and in 1955 he became Honorary Treasurer. His fellow-officers would be the first to admit that Mr. Davies, whether in or out of office, was the motive power behind the Society. For the last twenty-five years Mr. Davies served the Society diligently and it was his acumen in financial matters that kept it solvent. It is more remarkable when one considers that all this work for the Society was accomplished after normal retirement age. Even to the last, his thoughts were with the Society and its affairs. Information has been received that Mr. Davies left a legacy of one hundred pounds to the Society, and it is hoped that ways and means may be devised to utilise this money to perpetuate the memory of such a devoted Honorary Officer.
