ON 30 January 1597/8 an inquisition was held at Llanbadarn Fawr in respect of the manor of that name before Charles Vaughan, esquire, and John Thomas David Powell, gent., commissioners by virtue of a commission of Queen Elizabeth directed to them from the Court of the Exchequer. At the request of the jury concerned, a copy was made of the resulting roll and it is this document which eventually formed part of the Nanteos family papers and now rests in the archives of the National Library of Wales. The following is an edited and abbreviated version of this manuscript, modernised in spelling and punctuation but preserving the original names of both people and places. I am indebted to Dr. B. G. Charles of the National Library for his assistance in deciphering parts of the manuscript and for checking the typescript. W. J.
