OBITUARY THOMAS JONES PIERCE THE Society records with deep regret the passing on 9 October 1964, at the age of 58, of Professor T. Jones Pierce, M.A., F.S.A., Professor of Medieval Welsh History at the University College of Wales, Aber- ystwyth. He had been a member of the Executive Committee since 1947, and he was at all times prepared to be of service to the Society. Members will remember his addresses at Strata Florida, St. Dogmaels, and Aberaeron, and two articles by him have appeared in CEREDIGION- Strata Florida Abbey and Medieval Cardiganshire-A Study in Social Origins -the latter being a fine example of his original re- search into the darker periods of our history. By his passing, Wales has lost one of its finest historians, but we are grateful that a number of younger historians have emerged, many of whom have inherited part of their teacher's talent. Caernarvonshire Historical Society has lost a dedicated Chairman and Honorary Editor, and the Cambrian Archaeological Association has lost its President. The University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, has lost a valued member of its staff, and Rotary will miss his dedicated service to that organisation. Not only have we lost a scholar and historian of note, but we have also lost a gentleman, who was meticulous in his manners, and the impression left after being in his company was that he had inherited the courtesy of the Courts of the Welsh Princes-a period of which he was our prime interpreter. We remember his generosity to the Society when he held the office of High Sheriff of Cardiganshire some three years ago. We offer our sympathies to all those societies and institutions who had the pleasure and honour of knowing Professor Jones Pierce, but above all our deepest sympathies are extended to his widow and his two children, Elisabeth and Daniel. Ein braint oedd cael adnabod yr Athro, ac anrhydedd oedd cael cyfranogi o wybodaeth y gwr bonheddig a chwrtais hwn. D.M.J.
