1881, Tout served as Librarian of the College, and the author has made full use of the records of the early days of the College housed at the library. It is impossible in a short note such as this to indicate the vast amount of informa- tion contained within the covers of the first volume, which is well-produced by the University of Wales Press. The ordinary reader who is interested in the history of higher education in Ceredigion will find this volume a companion to University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1872-1972 by Dr. E. L. Ellis. The Reverend D. T. W. Price has an interesting tale to relate. In this task, he has succeeded admirably and one looks forward eagerly to the appearance of the next volume on the history of the College "which is at once the oldest Welsh university college and the youngest constituent college of the University of Wales". D.M.J. Short Note HISTORY ON THE GROUND, by A. J. Bird. University of Wales Press, Cardiff 1977. xiv + 135. illus. £ 3.25 Unfortunately, the author died in 1976 when the book was with the printers. It was a labour of love for the late Mr. A. J. Bird for over twenty-five years and resulted in this inventory of unrecorded material relating to the Mid Anglo-Welsh Borderland, with Introductory Chapters. As Emeritus Professor E. G. Bowen says in the Foreword "It is hoped that this publication, the first of its kind yet attempted, will be of interest, not only to students, but to the general public who are becoming increasingly aware of the treasures that lie partly hidden and forgotten in our rich inheritance in Britain". A similar book on Ceredigion would be welcomed. D.M.J.
