TWO EXAMPLES OF VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE IN THE PARISHES OF LLANSANTFFRAID AND ABERARTH Ty'n CWM A TRADITIONAL Cardiganshire COTTAGE IN THE PARISH OF LLANSANTFFRAID The subject of this report is a cottage which forms part of a group of three buildings situated in the narrow valley of the river Cledan immediately to the south-east of the village of Llan-non (grid ref. 517666). The buildings stand at right-angles to the lane which runs along the valley, and form a continuous line downhill towards the river. The cottage is the central unit in the group, with an adjoining byre at the downhill end the ground-plan of these two buildings appears on Fig. 5. At the uphill end of the cottage is another dwelling Fig. VIII, 5 which appears to be a later addition it has two floors, a higher roof- line, and is marked off by a butt joint in the rear wall. This later dwelling has recently been modernized (and an extension added at the rear), but it seems to have lacked any noteworthy features apart from a ladder-stair to the upper floor. T�'n Cwm is remarkable as an almost perfectly preserved example of a traditional house-type which is characterized by an internal cross-passage and a chimney at the end wall.
