OBITUARY EMERITUS PROFESSOR DAVID WILLIAMS, M.A., A.M., D.Lrrr. The Society records with sadness the passing on 24 February 1978 of Emeritus Professor David Williams who was the Sir John Williams Professor of Welsh History at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth from 1945 until 1967. His contribution to our knowledge of Welsh History is immense, and he was a pioneer in the study of Chartism and the Rebecca Riots. Many of us were nurtured for the Central Welsh Board School Certificate examinations on his slim volume History of Wales (1485-1931) which appeared in 1934, and those of us who were privileged in later years to be his students knew of his attention to detail, his kindness, his humour and good nature. He served on the Society's Executive Committee for over thirty years and we appreciated his support and guidance. We regret that he addressed the Society on but one occasion, but that address and his contributions to our journal have stood the test of time. Although ill-health confined him to his home in recent years, he retained a keen interest in the work of the Society. We extend to his widow, Hilarie, our sincerest sympathy. "Disgybl wyf, ef a'm dysgawdd". D.M.J.
