ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1982 Spring and Annual General Meeting The Spring and Annual General Meeting was held at the Lecture Room of Ceredigion Museum, (formerly the Coliseum Cinema), Aberystwyth, on 1 May. About 80 members were present and the Chairman of the Society, Mr. J. E. R. Carson, LL.B., presided. This was the first public lecture to be delivered in the building since its adaptation as a home for the Ceredigion Museum. The Chairman remarked that the Society had played a prominent part in establishing the Museum and he congratulated Ceredigion District Council on the work accomplished and complimented Dr. John D. Owen, the Curator, on his achievement. Following the business meeting at which the Annual Report and Financial State- ment were adopted and the Honorary Officers, Executive Committee and Local Correspondents elected, an address (illustrated) was delivered by Mr. Jeffrey L. Davies, B.A., Ph.D., of the Department of History, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth on "Recent work on Roman Ceredigion". A vote of thanks to the speaker was moved by Mr. A. H. A. Hogg, C.B.E., D. Litt., M.A., F.S.A., Aberystwyth, and seconded by Mr. Peter Lloyd Harvey, Aberaeron. At the conclusion, Dr. John D. Owen invited members to inspect the exhibits which were on display. He anticipated that it would take another two years before the whole exhibition area would be completed. Summer Meeting This meeting was held at Cardigan on 3 July when about 70 members assembled at the Hall of the Catholic Church. The meeting was conducted by the Honorary Secretary. Canon James Cunnane spoke on "Cardigan Town in the reign of Edward I". He described the development of the town and its walls; expounded his theories regard- ing the meanings of names of streets and areas of the town and he enlighted his address by openly challenging some beliefs which had been current for many years. One was made aware of the infectious enthusiasm Canon Cunnane has for the history of the town and it is hoped that his researches will appear in print before long. Excellent refreshments were provided by the ladies of the Church and Mr. T. Duncan Cameron, F.R.I.C.S., Ciliau Aeron, thanked them for their hospitality. The party was then taken on a conducted tour of the town following the line of the town walls and this concluded with a visit to the Castle. Favoured by fine weather, this was considered to be a successful field day and in the Castle dungeon, which was visited by candle light, the Honorary Secretary thanked Canon Cunnane for his excellent address and for acting as a superb guide throughout the afternoon and early evening. Autumn Meeting This meeting was held in the Lecture Room of the Ceredigion Museum, Aber- ystwyth, on 30 October. In this year which marks the Seventy-fifth anniversary of the granting of the Charter to the National Library of Wales, it was appropriate that the Society's Honorary Editor, who is a former National Librarian, should be invited to speak on the early history of the National Library.
