ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1983 Spring and Annual General Meeting The Spring and Annual General Meeting was held at the Lecture Room, Ceredig- ion Museum, Aberystwyth on 7 May. Fifty members were present and the Chair was taken by Mr. J. E. R. Carson, LL.B. Following the business session, an address on "Disenchantment with the World in Nineteenth Century Ceredigion" was delivered by Mr. Gareth W. Williams, M.A., M.Sc., of the Department of History, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. Captain J. Hext Lewes, O.B.E., former President, moved a vote of thanks to the speaker for the fascinating talk and he was seconded by Mr. David S. Downey, Aberaeron. Autumn Meeting The Autumn meeting was held on 29 October at the Ceredigion Museum, Aber- ystwyth, and twenty-five members were present. Miss Marged Haycock, M.A., Ph.D., of the Department of Welsh, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, delivered a talk in Welsh on "Y Gogynfeirdd a Cheredigion". This was a masterly analysis by one of our younger scholars on the poetical works of thirteenth century Wales. Mr. Dafydd Jenkins, M.A., LL.M., Litt. D., F.R. Hist.S., Aberystwyth, moved a vote of thanks and this was seconded by Mr. E. D. Jones, C.B.E., LL.D., B.A., F.S.A., Aberystwyth. Winter Meeting This meeting was held at the Ceredigion Museum, Aberystwyth on 10 December. Fifty members were present, and at the commencement the Chairman (Mr. J. E. R. Carson, LL.B.,) referred to the passing of Emeritus Professor E. G. Bowen, the Society's President. Members stood in silent tribute to a distinguished scholar and a valued member of the Society. The guest speaker was Miss Madge E. Hughes, M.A., Aberystwyth, who spoke on "Aberystwyth a fossil port". Illustrated with slides, this address outlined the development and expansion of maritime activities during the eighteenth century, which reached its zenith in the mid-nineteenth century, and considered its decline during the latter part of the century. A vote of thanks to the speaker was moved by Mr. T. Duncan Cameron, F.R.I.C.S., Aberaeron, and this was seconded by Mr. J. Arthur George, Box, Wiltshire (formely of Llwyndafydd). Archaeological Section This year, the Archaeological Sub-Committee arranged a programme consisting of field days and lectures. Visits were made as follows 8 May Sites North of Aberystwyth 12 June Sites in the Lampeter area and 10 September Sites in the Caerwedros/Penbryn area. The following lectures were arranged 24 February "Castles in Ceredigion" by Mr. C. J. Spurgeon, B.A., F.S.A., 24 March "Aspects of Historical Architecture" by Mr. Peter Smith, M.A., F.S.A. 2 April "The Archaeology of Lighthouses" by Mr. Douglas B. Hague, F.R.I.B.A. 20 October "Bronze Age in Ceredigion" by Dr. C. S. Briggs, B.A., F.S.A., 24 November "Churches in Ceredigion" by the Reverend J. Wyn Evans, B.A., B.D.,
