CEREDIGION CYLCHGRAWN CYMDEITHAS HYNAFIAETHWYR CEREDIGION JOURNAL OF THE CEREDIGION ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY CYFROL/VOLUME X 1984 RHIFYN/NUMBER I THE COUNTY AND ITS HISTORY, 1909-1984* First of all, it is my duty and my pleasure to thank the Society for the honour of electing me Chairman of the Executive Committee. It is a long and honourable succession beginning with Professor Tyrrell Green, Pro- fessor of Hebrew and Theology in St. David's College, Lampeter, who was followed by Principal J. H. Davies, then Professor H. J. Fleure, Professor Edward Edwards, David Thomas, O.B.E., Sir Bryner Jones, and last but not least, Mr. Eric Carson, our new President. You need hardly to be reminded that Mr. Carson has been closely associated with the Society since 1953, when he became one of the Joint Honorary Secretaries on the death of Sir William Llewelyn Davies, and since 1956 he has been Chairman. This is a longer period of service than any of his predecessors and he has provided the Society not only with incisive and wise leadership but also with that continuity which is a condition of its success. It is good to know that he will be available to advise and to assist us in our deliberations in the future. Nor should I wish this opportunity to pass without paying my personal tribute to our long-serving Honorary Secretary. When, in 1954, the Society was formerly associated with Cyngor Gwlad Ceredigion the first and immediate benefit was the services of Mr. Dafydd Morris Jones as Secretary, and no one who has looked over the affairs of the Society in the intervening thirty years can fail to be impressed by his energy, his efficiency and his dedication to the work of the Society. *An address given on 5 May 1984 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Society. The Chairman was the President, Mr. J. E. R. Carson, Ll.B. I should like to thank Mr. W. Dyfri Jones for his assistance.
