THE ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1989 Six events were arranged during 1989, beginning with the Annual General Meeting at Ceredigion Museum on 22 April. Mr. R. R. Owen resigned as Honorary Treasurer and Mr. J. Iorwerth Jones was elected to the post. The President, Mr. J. E. R. Carson, thanked Mr. Owen for his nine years of service to the Society, and presented him with a volume in recognition of his contribution. Mr. Glyn Lewis Jones resigned as Local Correspondent for Aberystwyth and was thanked for his service. The other officers and members of the Executive Committee were re-elected. Mr. Geraint Phillips was elected Honorary Membership Secretary and Mr. Gwilym Thomas elected Local Correspondent for Llan-non. The lecture was given by Dr. Chris Arnold of the Extra- Mural Department, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, on the subject 'Archaeological Approaches to the Mediaeval Castle in Montgomeryshire'. He showed how quite different techniques had been used to investigate Mathrafal Castle, Powys Castle and Simon's Castle. These sites were visited under the guidance of Dr. Arnold on the Annual Excursion on 27 May. The Excursion was once again arranged by Mr. T. Duncan Cameron. On 16 September a tour of Roman sites in Mid-Wales was arranged by Dr. Jeffrey Davies of the Department of History, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. A meeting at St. David's College, Lampeter, was held jointly with the College's Archaeological Society on 31 October. Dr. Keith Ray, former Director of the Ceredigion Archaeological Commission, lectured on 'Ceredigion Hillforts: Recent Survey Evidence'. On 18 November Mr. Rhidian Griffiths of the National Library of Wales spoke at Ceredigion Museum on "Caniadaeth wag, ysmala, ddigrifol" Ieuan Gwyllt a Chanu Cymru'. This lecture on the nineteenth century composer was the only Welsh lecture of the year. The last meeting of the year was given by Miss Rosemary Jones of the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historic Monuments in Wales on the subject 'Popular Culture, Policing and the Disappearance of the "Ceffyl Pren" in Cardigan c. 1837-1850' on 16 December at Ceredigion Museum. The attendance at all the meetings was pleasing. The Society is grateful to all who contributed to its activities, particularly to the speakers and to Ceredigion Museum. During the year Mr. Geraint Phillips took up all the duties of arranging the membership of the Society. His work has eased the burden of the General Secretary. With Mr. William Howells as Honorary Publications Secretary the Society now has an effective secretarial team. During the year the Executive Committee met twice, as did the Archaeological Sub-Committee. Editorial work continues on Volume I of the County History and work on Volume III has already begun. During 1989 Mr. William Howells extended his Index to CEREDIGION to include Volume X and at the close of the year the Executive Committee decided to publish this valuable work during 1990. The number of members of the Society remains at around 500, but the Society's income in 1989 was less than its expenditure. In the coming years it will be necessary to keep a close watch on the Society's finances and particularly on the subscription, which must now be a considerable bargain at £ 5.00. TWAN M JONES
