the First Synod of Cashel (1101), but the statutes of the Second (1171-72) were signed by Henry II of England, who had just invaded the island. The general state of the Irish Church shows marked similarities in certain respects to the Welsh Church of the period, though by this time (as Dr. Fenn (1976) has reminded us), there was greater episcopal influence within the latter. Even so, Wendy Davies (1983) wrote of the pre-Conquest Welsh Church: 'it is quite impossible to consider or compare it with the Irish Church in any real sense, as is the common temptation'. Fr. Gwynn, incidentally, tells of Gerald of Wales' scathing criticism of the Irish Church partly because it could boast no martyrs. Fr. Gwynn's magisterial and classic work suffers from the occasional misprint; e.g. 'spelchral' for 'sepulchral' (p.Ill), 'conformation' for 'confirmation' (p. 198), 'cartulery' for 'cartulary' (p.256) and 'guarantied' for 'guaranteed' (p.275). A major omission is the lack of any maps, essential in a work of this kind obviously destined to have a readership far beyond the shores of Ireland. DAVID H.
