D R L Jones, Vicars of Llangynwyd [Maesteg 1994]. 41 pp, pbk. £ 2.00 plus pp. ISBN: 0 9518108 2 0. Obtainable from the Revd E Bernard Thomas, The Vicarage, Brynmawr Place, Maesteg, Mid Glam. This is the third in a series of monographs on the history of Llangynwyd Church and it has been produced to accompany a list of incumbents placed in the church during October 1994. The list is complete from 1570 onwards, but there are many gaps between the thirteenth century and that date. Those who know the difficulties in obtaining such lists can appreciate the painstaking scholarship involved. It is well illustrated, and includes revealing pen-portraits of some intriguing and notorious incumbents, including Michael Roberts [1639-57], John Parry [1790-1829] and Morgan Henry Jones, who resigned after a row about ritual in 1924. ESCAPE: An Episode in the Life of John Richard Worthington Poole-Hughes, Bishop of Llandaff 1975-85. [Llandaff Society Occasional Paper no 9, 1993]. 27 pp. Obtainable from the Chairman of the Llandaff Society, 7 Heol y Pavin, Llandaff, Cardiff CF5 2EG. Readers of the biography of Bishop Poole-Hughes, reviewed in our last volume, may be interested in this paper. It gives his own account of his escape from Italy as a prisoner-of-war during 1943-4. It is illustrated with a number of photographs. Many of the family letters and papers on which this biography was based have recently been placed on deposit in the Library of Rhodes House, Oxford University.
