contributed to the decline [of Nonconformity in Wales]". He is at least honest enough to add, "the dialectic theologians could do nothing to stem the tide." Pope's style, and his theological views, clearly owe a great deal to the late Dr R. Tudur Jones. Both are at their best in making links between different conceptual fields, and seeing the effect of one upon the other-as Pope links theological and social liberalism (e.g. pp. 11, 22, 30, 55). However, unlike Dr Tudur, he evinces no sense of humour, and he does not share Dr Jones's remarkable ability to synthesise and organise his material readably. Although each summary of a particular theologian's thought is lucid and helpful, Pope moves from theologian to theologian without making sufficient connections or comparisons. This gives the book a strangely half-digested feel that makes it far less readable than it deserves to be. For those studying Welsh twentieth century theology through the medium of English, this book and its predecessor volume will be essential reading. In bringing four theologians-especially Miall Edwards-to a wider readership, Pope does Welsh Congregationalism a great service. However, this book does not yet live up to its title. A third volume is needed to wrestle more fully with Welsh Nonconformist theological engagement with social issues between the wars. Contrary to the impression created by this book, Hegelian Idealism or Barthian neo-orthodoxy were not the only responses possible. In particular, the older Calvinism and Arminianism of the two Methodist Connexions in Wales deserve a fuller treatment than the passing references offered here. Perhaps this might be Mr Pope's next project? GETHIN RHYS Coleg Trefeca R. Tudur Jones, Grym y Gair a Fflam y Ffydd, gol D.
