ST JOHN MANOR HOUSE, HIGHLIGHT (UCHELOLAU), VALE OF GLAMORGAN (ST 0997 6967) The scanty remains of the late medieval manor house at Highlight are incorporated in a range of modern farm outbuildings. These were examined and recorded prior to conversion into a dwelling house.12 Fig. J. Highlight: Plan of manor house. The manor house was of H-shaped plan comprising a hall flanked by two service wings which had upper floors (fig. 3). The structure was originally of good quality lias limestone masonry cemented with sandy lime mortar, and embellished with finely dressed architectural detail. Among dressings recovered from the debris or re-used in later walling were fragments of fifteenth-century door surrounds and window detail, including part of a mullioned oriel window of fine Oolitic limestone, which had probably lighted the dais end of the hall. There was also evidence that the roof covering had been of Cornish slate. The hall and east wing had been demolished to foundation level in the eighteenth century and replaced by a small outbuilding which
