earlier ground surface. This can probably be associated with a medieval structure that had been excavated previously east of Paget Road. A series of features of twentieth-century origin were also identified. One group of features probably represent the remains of a series of wooden structures, which relate to an earlier fairground known to have been located on the site. Another group was later in date, and these features were probably associated with the previous amusement arcade. J. Although the site is located close to Ely Roman villa, only post-medieval pottery and modern drainage systems were found on the site. Steve Clarke, Monmouth Archaeology BUTE PARK, CARDIFF (ST 1717 7628) A watching brief undertaken at Bute Park, Cardiff located the remains of a series of post-medieval structures and a cobbled surface. Ceramic and mortar evidence indicates that these structures were built in at least two phases, probably during the seventeenth century, and then demolished during or after the eighteenth century. It is possible that these structures were associated with a house, known from documentary evidence to have been constructed by the Herbert family in the area some time after the mid-sixteenth century, and demolished in 1830. Artefactual evidence was also found relating to the nearby Blackfriars Dominican Friary, including fragments of medieval floor tiles and roof tiles. A late nineteenthth-century replacement floor tile was derived from renovation work undertaken at the Friary under the direction of the third Marquess of Bute. J.
