time it inhibits the spread of knowledge and study of Welsh music. New thinking about music and musicology is shared through international languages, and this requires the transfer of new modes of thinking from international languages to Welsh, and the appropriation or creation of new terminology in Welsh. The reconciliation of the first two objectives to the third, and the paramount need for more writing about music in Welsh has formed the decision to publish everything in the journal in both Welsh and English. Only by doing this is it possible to meet and maximize the objectives of the journal. Such a mode of presentation will be particularly beneficial to students (in the widest sense) who can observe the communication of ideas and the use of terminologies in both languages. Our original intention was to print the whole journal in both languages in parallel. Two factors prevented this: the lack of coincidence of page-breaks between text and translation, and the fact that some expressions and especially puns and plays on words cannot be translated directly. Each paper therefore appears first in the language in which it was written, and then in translation. Some bilingual authors have prepared both texts; contributions of monolingual authors have been translated by the Translation Unit, University of Wales, Bangor, led by Glenda Carr. What became apparent at the first conference of the Centre for Advanced Welsh Music Studies was the range and extent of Welsh musical scholarship. Both the Centre and this journal are intended to facilitate the sharing, co-ordination, dissemination and furthering of that scholarship, complementing existing activities and publications such as Welsh Music, Canu Gwerin (Journal of the Welsh Folk-Song Society) and Allwedd y Tannau (Journal of the Penillion Singing Society). Although the journal will settle to an annual pattern, the first four volumes will appear more rapidly during 1996 and 1997. The con- tents of the journal will not be restricted to conference papers: instructions for submission of all contributions are given at the end of the journal.
