and the manuscript reading is given in the footnotes. Expansion of abbreviations is indicated by italics, and the ends of membranes with a vertical stroke (I). Damaged or illegible text is indicated by diamond brackets <>, and the missing text is supplied when it is obvious. Text excised from the manuscript by erasure or crossing-out is indicated with square brackets [ ]. Manuscript capitalization and punctuation have been retained, though lineation and rubrication have not. Virgules are indicated by a forward slash Manuscript word division has been preserved for the most part, though it is occasionally difficult to tell what the copyist's intention is. The translation is literal, though I have consistently translated cerdd davod and cerdd dant as 'poetry' and 'music' respectively. I have not translated the names of Welsh poetic and metrical classes, since the English equivalents are at best unhelpful and at worst misleading. With these Welsh terms I have consistently used plural forms with numbers greater than one, rather than Welsh usage which allows both singular and plural forms. I am grateful for the assistance of R. Marcus Wells in preparing the translation. (Mae'r Statud wedi goroesi'n gyfan gwbl neu'n rhannol mewn dros saith deg o gopïau, yn amrywio o ran dyddiad o tuag amser Eisteddfod Caerwys 1523 i ddiwedd y ddeunawfed ganrif. Yn dilyn gorchymyn y Statud, y dylai fod copi ym meddiant pob bardd (11. 257-9; cyfieithiad 11. 302-4), yr oedd rhai o gopïau'r unfed ganrif ar bymtheg yn nwylo beirdd hysbys, er bod y mwyafrif ohonynt, gan gynnwys yr holl gopïau a wnaed ar ôl tua 1600, wedi eu gwneud gan ysgolheigion a hynafiaethwyr. Ar hyn o bryd yr wyf yn paratoi argraffiad o'r Statud a'i thestunau atodol o'r pedair llawysgrif ar bymtheg cyn 1600,1 ac mae Bethan Miles wrthi'n paratoi argraffiad beirniadol o'r holl lawysgrifau sydd ar gadw. Y testun presennol yw un Lbl MS Add. 19711. Mae'n amlwg mai copi gwaith barddol yw hwn; mae Graham C. G. Thomas o Lyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru wedi adnabod y llawysgrifen fel un Wiliam Llyn (1534/5-80). Cafwyd dau argraffiad blaenorol o'r testun Cymraeg; argraffwyd fersiwn Lbl MS Add. 19711 gan J. H. Davies,2 tra argraffwyd fersiwn o AB MS Peniarth 270 gan Thomas Parry.3 Rhol femrwn yw Lbl MS Add. 19711 o ddeuddeg dalen wedi eu gwnïo y naill ar ôl y llall (145mm x 260mm (modern) + 735mm + 650mm + 620mm + 500mm + 360mm + 230mm + 35mm + 415mm + 405mm + 410mm + 235mm), yn cynnwys testun y Statud yn unig. Mae pob adran o'r testun yn cychwyn â blaenlythyren addurniadol anghelfydd, dwy ohonynt wedi eu haddurno â llinlun o baun a chath. Mae sawl adran wedi ei rhuddellu, ac mae llawer o'r adrannau yn cychwyn â nifer o linellau mewn llythrennau mwy eu maint na
