In one place, over a stretch of 200 yards, the pavement is not to be seen, but you can detect it under the surface, covered with two feet of turf. A pavement of heavy stone slabs for 200 yards or more could not have been carried out by one man, but by the community of Strata Florida. They needed the road for several purposes. They had to carry wool from the mountain folds to the Monastery and occasion- ally, no doubt, they transported an invalid to their institution to drink from their Healing Cup. The Monks, like most of us, had tender feet and disliked the wet places, and, on the highlands of the parish of Caron for the purpose of collecting their commodities on their vast estate, they paved the way.
