Employment Problems and Prospects facing Anglesey: A Special Case? JEREMY ALDEN Department of Town Planning, U.W.I.S.T., Cardiff. PAUL VINING Wyn Thomas and Partners, Cardiff (Received March 1979; in revised form June 1980) Abstract The main purpose of this article is to analyse the employment prob- lems and prospects facing Anglesey, a Special Development Area, which has not only one of the highest rates of unemployment in Wales, but also in Britain. The article examines the current position of Anglesey in terms of unemployment, labour activity rates, employment growth and structure and population change. It includes a manpower forecast for the Island which estimates the likely number of jobs required in the future, and the number of jobs which would become available if past trends continued. The manpower forecast prepared for the period 1976-91 illustrates the interdependency between population and employment project- ions and reveals the extent of the employment problem facing Anglesey.
