Predictions derived from a statistical model of behaviour for various types of retail goods and the market penetration of individual stores are tested against the Cardiff results. They are shown to be extremely accurate, providing a high level of precision in the prediction of shopping behaviour. There can be little doubt that the contemporary and applied orientations of these papers are very far from Bowen's own particular research interests in settlement studies in Wales. Nevertheless, they represent another and important aspect of Welsh urban and economic studies and, incidentally, demonstrate the wide ranging nature of modern geographical inquiry. Wayne K.D.
