RADNORSHIRE SCHOOL LOG BOOKS. (Continued.) By MAJOR J. MOSTYN, M.C., M.A. ABBEYCWMHIR SCHOOL. THE earliest Log-book of this school I have seen was commenced on the 1st November, 1880. The Philips' family and Abbeycwmhir School. Numerous entries in the log-books show the very keen interest taken in the school by the Philips' family (The Hall, Abbeycwmhir). In November, 1886, Mr. E. W. Colt-Williams, H.M.I., in his report on the school states "I must commence this report by noting with sorrow the death which has just taken place of Mr. Philips, who not only for many years bore the sole cost of this school but up to the end took a personal interest in its welfare." This is a reference to the death of Mr. Geo. H. Philips, who regularly visited the school, inspected the registers, gave money prizes both for attainment in Needlework and other specific subjects, and also for regular attendance. His last visit recorded in the log-book was on the 8th October. 1886, and on the 22nd October appears the entry omitted the singing lesson this afternoon owing to the universal sorrow caused by the death of Mr. Philips at noon to-day." Mrs. and Miss M. Philips continued to visit the school and to pay particular attention to the needlework taught in the school. For many years after 1886, Mrs. Philips and Miss Christine Philips continued their personal interest in the school. In the year 1907 begin to appear records of the visits of Capt. Francis G. P. Philips as a Manager of the school. In the year 1923, the school was sold to the Radnorshire County Council by Major Francis G. P. Philips, and the school hereafter became a Council School. r-
