CHANTRY REPORTS 2nd. EDWARD VI. ■r- THE PARISH OF CLYRO. There is within the said Parishe one akre of arrable land now in the tenour of David ap Jenkin owt of the whiche there hathe been alwais paid towards the fynding of a light before the Image of Our Lady yerely ijd." (2d.) Royal Commission on Ancient Monuments (Radnor). THE SAINT'S FIELD. A meadow which probably belonged to the monastic grange of Clyro." The old church at Clyro was pulled down in 1865 and the present one erected on the same site. It is scarcely probable that there is now living in the Parish anyone who would be able to give any information as to the appearance of the interior of the old church. However, thanks to the courtesy of Canon Lewis, a copy of whose letter is appended, it would appear to be practically certain that the rent from The Saint's Field was devoted to the fynding of a light before the Image of our Lady" in the Lady Chapel of Clyro Old Parish Church and had nothing to do with the Monastic Grange as suggested by the Commissioners. The original church at Clyro was most probably older than the Monastic Grange which in accordance with Cistercian custom would have its own chapel within the precincts. It is, of course, impossible to be certain of the fact as to the original donor's intention of the gift of The Saint's Field, but the probability of his bequest to the Parish Church outweighs the theory of such gift being given to the Monastic Grange, especially in view of the report of the Chantry Commissioners and the information contained in Canon Lewis' letter. Letter. CLYRO VICARAGE, HEREFORD, Dear Sir, 23rd June, 1934. I believe there was an old plan of the Church which showed that there was a Lady Chapel. Unfortunately this plan has been lost, but I think you can safely infer that a Lady Chapel existed in the original building. Yours faithfully (Signed) HILARY W. LEWIS. C. J. R.
