From Major General R. STEDMAN LEWIS, C.B., O.B.E. Y Neuadd, Rhayader Radnorshire. 8th August, 1964 Dear Sir, I have recently noticed mistakes in certain publications which are recognised as authoritative by students of local history, and I ask that I may be allowed to correct these mistakes through the Society's Tran- sactions. The first two mistakes occur in "Corrections and Additions" to Radnorshire by W. H. Howse, published in the 1949 Transactions of the Radnorshire Society. I must add that Mr. Howse has asked for the publication of these further corrections. (1) "Additions" Under "Family Residences." p. 70. It is stated that "Cwmelan lies beneath the waters of Craig Goch Reservoir". This should read, "Cwmelan lies beneath the waters of Caban Coch reservoir above Garreg Ddu submerged dam." (2) "Additions". Under "Foxhounds", p. 186. It is stated, "Presumably the reference is to Thomas Lewis Lloyd." This should read "Presumably the reference is to John Lewis the huntsman who married Elizabeth, daughter and sole heiress of Thomas and Margaret Lewis Lloyd, and who was the grandfather of Robert Lewis Lloyd, the last of Nantgwyllt." The other correction is to Herbert M. Vaughan's book The South Wales Squires. In chapter XVI, "The Story of Nantgwyllt," first paragraph, the author states "Even so, the old house itself remains intact, though submerged some fifty feet below the surface of the lowest reservoir, for by a special clause in the contract of sale the edifice itself was never demolished". There is no truth in this statement and there is no such special clause in the contract of sale. Both Nantgwyllt and Cwmelan were demolished. If they had not been their tops would be above water at most if not at all times. What remains to be seen when the water level is low, are the remains of the kitchen garden walls and road bridges which were at the back of the house. R.
