AN INCOMPLETE ACCOUNT 10/11 EDWARD III) By E. J. L. COLE (Unpublished Crown-copyright material in the Public Record Office has been reproduced by permission of the Controller of H.M. Stationery Office.) Tms roll, of which only the final membrane survives, is listed as SC. 6/1209/7. Radnor, with members. 11 Edward III among the Ministers' Accounts in the Public Record Office. The whole of the record of receipts is missing, and so is at least one section of the payments probably the one dealing with lapsed rents. As the preamble has also gone the clue to the date is contained under money payments', but that merely refers to the 11th year Is it year 10-11, or year 11-12 ? If the latter, one would expect the roll for year 12-13 to start with arrears of £ 626. 13.2fd. — the last figure mentioned in this account-but the account for 12-13 Edward III has survived and the arrears there brought forward only amount to £ 128.4.8d. Thus the roll cannot be assigned to year 11-12 but must relate to year 10-11, i.e. to the year following the one discussed in Transactions, Vol. XXXIII. If this is so, then using the two vital figures that have survived, one can express the arithmetic of the year 10-11 in simple terms Arrears £ 238 5 21 Payments £ 101 10 31 Receipts 489 18 31 Arrears 626 13 21 £ 728 3 6 £ 728 3 6 This means a fall in revenue of almost £ 109 between the years 9-10 and 10-11 and a decrease of over £ 439 in expenses or payments. The latter figure would be bound to vary, e.g. money payments to the King's Chamber alone came to £ 466.13.4 in year 9-10, but the loss of revenue defies explanation. There are no receipts of any kind from the patria of Kerry or the manor of Pembridge in year 12-13, these being farmed by the King to the earl of Arundel and Hugh Tirel but the farm of Kerry (to Richard, earl of Arundel) and Pembridge (to Hugh Tirel) did not take place until the summer of 1338, i.e. during year 11-12. The present roll has been very much amended but most of it is legible, including the amendments. An approximate translation follows, the deletions, amendments, and insertions appearing in italics. Doubtful words or phrases have been put in inverted commas, as they may be susceptible of more exact interpretation. The year 10-11 Edward III can be taken to mean from Michaelmas 1336 to Michaelmas 1337 for this account. Cost of bridge hiring men felling timber for the bridge of the castle of Radnor 5s. carting the timber from Northwood to Radnor castle 40d. one carpenter hired for making the bridge 30s. allowed by letter two men hired for sawing the timber for 4 weeks at 3s. of Griffon per week 12s.
