BRIEF NOTES ON THE EARLY HIGH SHERIFFS OF RADNORSHIRE (Continued) By E. J. L. COLE 1558/9. Sir ROBERT WHITNEY OF WHITNEY. Eldest of the nine children of Robert Whitney of Icomb, Glos. (d. 1541) by Margaret dau. of Robert Wey of Gloucestershire. The father, though heir to the large Herefordshire estates of his family, preferred Icomb, which he inherited through his mother. The son married Sybil, a dau. of Sir James Basker- ville of Eardisley (d. 1546), and was knighted at the coronation of Mary Tudor in 1553. His brother John was a page to the young Elizabeth. Robert was also M.P. for Herefordshire in 1559. At his death, in August 1567, he possessed the manors of Whitney, Pencombe, Ocle Pychard, King's Caple, Icomb, Boughrood, Combewich (Som.) and Clifton (War- wicks.). By Sybil he had five children-Sir James (o.s.p. 1587), Eustace (d. 1608, having been sheriff of Herefordshire in 1596, and of Radnorshire in 1606-see Trans. XX (1950) and Woolhope Trans. XXXII, Part I (1946) for his family), Robert, Blanche, and Elizabeth wife of John Price of Mynachty, sheriff 1572/3. 1559/60. MORGAN MEREDITH OF LLYNWENT. Son of Meredith ap Ieuan ap David Vychan and 6th in descent from Philip Dorddu (Dwnn, 251). His name is usually associated with Bryndraenog in Beguildy while he was certainly living in that parish around 1580, his chief residence in the early part of Elizabeth's reign was Llynwent in the parish of Llanbister. In 1551 and 1557/8 he was one of the two chief constables of the Hundred of Knighton. He was sheriff of Radnorshire again in 1581/2 and of Mont- gomeryshire in 1590. His will dated 15 September 1592 (P.C.C. 18 Dixy) directs burial in Beguildy church and mentions bequests of 10s. each towards the repair of Llanbister, Llanbadarn Fynydd and Beguildy churches, in that order. Bequests are made to four sons and two daughters, to 17 grandchildren, to his wife Dorothy-her name was Goleubryd according to Dwnn­‘ she to continue to dwell in my now dwellinghouse at Beguildy and £ 100 is left towards his funeral expenses. His sons Meredith and John Vaughan were to enter into mutual bonds of £ 1000 concerning the sheriffwick of Montgomery', John to pay Meredith 5 marks he owes me concerning the said office Morgan was ancestor of the Vaughan family of Bryndraenog. 1560/1. Williams (p. 89) states that Robert Vaughan, of Winforton and Presteigne, was sheriff in 1566 and 1571 (dates incorrect, as demonstrated some years ago by W. H. Howse), M.P. Radnor, 1554, 1559. Probably second son of Charles Vaughan of Hergest, and (p. 96) his address in 1566 (1562/3) as Winforton and in 1571
