BOOK REVIEW A CENTURY OF AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS: GREAT BRITAIN 1866-1866 This slim volume, published in 1968 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, and available at Her Majesty's Stationery Office, is essentially a work of reference, but the introduction and the commentary on the statistical tables and maps really convert the volume into a short history of British agriculture and agricultural statistics. The maps, which are usually for the 3 years 1875, 1938 and 1966, show almost at a glance the trends which British farming has followed over the past century. The statistics and maps give valuable and reliable information about land use, crops and livestock, farm holdings, workers and wages, the use of machinery and market prices of-farm products. In his introduction, Mr. A. H. J. Baines of the Ministry's Statistics Division shows that all resistance by farmers to making the prompt returns, on which the annual June census is based, has not yet quite disappeared-perhaps understandably in view of the fact that the total number of questions to be answered could be as many as 146 R.
