Englefield to Cromwell. 1532 I thank you for procuring my recompence for the office of 11 Feb the mastership of the Wards. My Lord President and I R.O. have examined the murder of the four men in the lordship of Elvell committed Twelfth Day twelvemonth, heretofore examined in the Star Chamber. At the next assizes in Harford to be held Monday in the fourth week of Lent, I intend to put the new statute in execution against the offenders. When they are put on their trial, great labour, I doubt not, will be made for them to the King, for the greatest offenders, who are Vaughans. Hereford, 11 Feb. Vol. XI. 385/19. Grants in August 1536. Th. Vaughan of Clero, in the lordship of Elvell, marches of Wales. Pardon. He stands indicted with one Mathew ap David, of the lordship of Huntyngton, marches of Wales, weaver, and others, for the murder of David ap Howell ap Yevor, 6 Jan. 25 Henry VIII, at Mynyngbaghe in the said lordship of Elvell, to which place the county of Hereford is the nearest county adjoining. Sulyard to Cromwell. 1538 According to Cromwell's instructions they have examined 18 July the matter of Roger Vaghan of Clero, as shall appear by the R.O. books sent by the bearer, Mr. John ap Rice, and by the bearer himself, his Lordship's trusty servant, for whom they beg credence.
