Being a day by day account of the indiscre- tions and otherwise, of one of the larger Joneses — Euros We move into Number 9 and promotion on The Record leads me to keep a journal separate from the published word. Late Summer. Sept. 10th The leave I took to move into our new house was curtailed by a debacle in the Gardening Notes which necessitated my partial recall. The whimsy which attaches itself to this alternately tedious and comic side of my life prohibits comment, but since, under various pseudonyms, some 5,000 words of mine appear weekly-and not without some chagrin on my part-I have taken myself to task and determined to devote at least one part of my day to more serious things. The idea of a Thoughts-Book preceded this but like the vulgar cactii or the invalid tendrils of contemporary house plants which Shirl' adores, this idea seemed twee, a piece of mental chi-chi which I ignored, preferring Journals-One as having at least some semblance of literary pretence.
