wasn't listening too closely, so it wasn't so funny that the next time I met Rhiannon I didn't remember a thing of all this, not even when she offered me a cup of tea which I took gladly, it being a hot afternoon. What brought it all back to mind was the next time I met Williams Top Shop. This time he came across the bar to join me and, after he'd given me a pint and seen me wash it down he said with a sly smile on his fat face: 'Hear you've been testing out what I said?' I didn't know what he meant, of course, and I looked puzzled, so he went on to add: 'Hear your van was outside Rhiannon Watkins's a long time the other afternoon.' Then it all came back to me and I got flaming angry at once. 'I never done a thing to her,' I said fiercely. 'Nor her to me. So shut your mouth and have a care what you say!' 'Don't be bloody silly, mun,' he chuckled, putting his hand on my arm most friendly. 'I just wanted to remind you what I told you of. No man wants to lose his reputation without a cause. I was only warning you. When you're in business it's no good letting things like that get round about us, and certainly not when they're false.' 'Well, it is false!' I answered, still angry. 'Very false. Makes me wonder whether the rest you said wasn't false too!' 'Oh no, boyo,' he answered, patting my hand. 'Just wait a bit and you'll find out.' Of course this set my curiosity going and I decided to find out for myself How to do it I didn't know, but I did things I'm a bit ashamed of now, and probably I might even laugh about them if I wasn't in this position at the moment. I used to call on her more than usual, and more often I'd linger by the van at houses nearby hers. I kept watch by day, and it wasn't long before I was prowling about her place at night watching the comings and goings near Rhiannon's house, and it's true to say I never saw a soul go there I wouldn't expect. Times there were, of course, when Rhiannon went out dressed for the evening-and mighty smart she was then too !-and she'd leave her husband minding the kids. These nights came every other Friday and I set out to follow her. All I discovered was that she went to a house in Cardiff, and it was only after we got friendly that she mentioned she was visiting her sister every other Friday. She must have told me this when I first asked her to come to the pictures with me. Previous to that I'd managed to be about when I knew she'd be going out shopping, and I'd offer her a lift.
