In Wales either boarding house iron rations or pseudo-French fripperies seem to be the usual fare. Only the other day in Scotland I had a vast plate of succulent Scotch Broth, delicious fresh fried haddock and chips, jam roll and custard and a cup of coffee for 3s 3d. Are there many places in Wales where you could get such good value and such quantity? And another thing. Wales ought to have a really good up-to-date guide book. Instead of Councils printing old-fashioned, dull little booklets about some obscure mining valley town, the Welsh Tourist and Holidays Board should encourage them to contribute that money towards a comprehensive guide book, reasonably priced, fully documented, well-written, designed and printed, that would really do justice to Wales. T V, too, could do much more to present every side of Welsh life and landscape imaginatively in film. You may think I am being beastly to the Welsh and belly-aching about inessentials. I know that we need better roads and rail services. All that, I'm sure, will come in time. But there's plenty we can do now to get ready for the 1960 Tourist Season. We can make up our minds that we will improve the service in the restaurants and cafes, and put on a few coats of fresh bright paint. But, above all, we have got to try to get out of our way to receive our visitors gladly and sincerely, and persuade them that there really is 'a welcome in the hill-side, a welcome in the dale And isn't it time we did something about those ridiculous licensing laws?
